Prayers, Please

Prayers, please, for the family of Larry Jones, who drowned this past weekend. He was a classmate of mine at St. Mark Elementary and his family are members of our parish.

Incline Your ear, O Lord, unto our prayers, wherein we humbly pray You to show Your mercy upon the soul of Your servant Larry Jones, whom You have commanded to pass out of this world, that you would place him in the region of peace and light, and bid him be partaker with Your Saints. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Minute Meditations - September 1

Scripture
"They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers."

(Acts 2:42)

Reflection
"When the Church prays in her Liturgy it is Christ Who prays.
For the Church prays in Christ,
and Christ prays in the Church:
the Body prays in the Head, and the Head in the Body."

- St. Augustine

Prayer
Glorious Lord, help me to pray the Liturgy in union with Christ for Your glory. At every Eucharist, let me consciously adore and thank You, make reparation to You, and present my petitions before You.

From My Inbox: $20

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20.00 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?"

Hands started going up.

He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this. He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, "Who still wants it?"

Still the hands were up in the air.

"Well," he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. "Now, who still wants it?"

Still the hands went into the air.

"My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE. You are special- Don't EVER forget it."

If you do not pass this on, you may never know the lives it touches, the hurting hearts it speaks to, or the hope that it can bring.

Count your blessings, not your problems.

And remember: Amateurs built the ark.
Professionals built the Titanic.

If God brings you to it - He will bring you through it.

Soccer Lessons

I haven't been posting lately because the beginning of the school year has hit us like brick. With Kathy working as the cafeteria manager at the kiddos' school, and with me being at the beginning of the school year, we haven't had much time for anything but eating and sleeping (and not much time for those, either).

I have mentioned in past postings that Nicholas is playing soccer for his school's middle school this year, even though he is in 5th grade. Practice and games have taken up every other day and the weekends lately. However, this evening's game made me the most proud.

Keeping in mind that Nicholas is in the 5th grade and he's playing for a middle school team, he doesn't get much playing time. He averages 5 minutes at the end of each half if he is lucky. He doesn't seem to mind, and we have encouraged a "team player" mentality when it comes to sports. God bless him if he has inherited his dad's athletic ability.

Tonight's game was his crowning moment so far this season. And he didn't even play. There was anotherplayer who locked his uniform in the school today and was unable to play. Recognizing that this other player was an intergral part of the team, Nicholas offered his jersey and cleats to this other player so he could play. The coaches didn't ask him, the players didn't ask him. I truly believe that he knew that sacrificing himself would benefit the team. I actually was angry when I saw the other player with his jersey, until I found out it was a selfless act initiated by Nicholas himself.

Whay do we have our kids play sports? To learn teamwork? To learn sportsmanship? To learn empathy? Nicholas seems to have learned all that already. He didn't score a goal. He didn't block a goal. He didn't even play - but according to his coach, he was the hero of the game.

Reflection

We go to Jesus through Mary, and through Jesus we find the Grace of the Holy Spirit."

Busy Busy

With the start of school (both mine and my kiddos) last Wednesday, it's been hard to find time to blog. In addition, Nicholas is playing for his school's soccer team this year, so we have games and practices to fit in our schedule as well.

A few prayer intentions, though:

  • For G.N. and family in his recovery from by-pass surgery....

  • For all administrators, teachers, students and parents this new school year....

  • For M.C. and his struggle with finding a bone marrow donor....

  • For the turmoil in the Middle East....

  • For M.P. and family in his continual struggle with serious health probems...

  • For A.N. in her struggle with back pain/spasms...

  • For M.W. and her boys for a safe and fun-filled weekend...

  • For all my family and friends...

...Let us pray to the Lord.

From My Inbox: Serious Times...People of All Faiths

During these serious times people of all faiths should remember these four religious truths:

1. Muslims do not recognize Jews as God's chosen people.
2. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah.
3. Protestants do not recognize the pope as the leader of the Christian world.
4. Baptists do not recognize each other at Hooters or liquor stores.

My Comments:
Laugh, it's funny! I'll be posting more "serious" reflectoins in the next couple of days.

From My Inbox: Pillsbury Doughboy

Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.
Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours.
Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions.
Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, two children, John Dough and Jane Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.
The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

Today's Saint - St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross

Also known as:
Teresia Benedicta; Edith Stein
Memorial:
9 August
Profile:
Youngest of seven children in a Jewish family. Edith lost interest and faith in Judaism by age 13. Brilliant student and philospher with an interest in phenomenology. Studied at the University of Gottingen and in Breisgau. Earned her doctorate in philosophy in 1916 at age 25. Witnessing the strength of faith of Catholic friends led her to an interest in Catholicism, which led to studying a catechism on her own, which led to "reading herself into" the Faith. Converted to Catholicism in Cologne, Germany; baptized in Saint Martin's church, Bad Bergzabern, on 1 January 1922.

Carmelite nun in 1934, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Teacher in the Dominican school in Speyer, and lecturer at the Educational Institute in Munich. However, anti-Jewish pressure from the Nazis forced her to resign both positions. Profound spiritual writer.

Both Jewish and Catholic, she was smuggled out of Germany, and assigned to Echt, Holland in 1938. When the Nazis invaded Holland, she and her sister Rose, also a convert to Catholicism, were captured and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz where they died in the ovens like so many others.

12 October 1891 at Breslaw, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland) as Edith Stein
