Minute Meditations - July 21

Scripture
"In accord with Scipture, Christ did not please himself."

(Romans 15:3)

Reflection
The greatest gift that we can receive from God in the present world is this:
To know how, to desire, and to be able to conquer self by renouncing our own will."

- St. Francis of Assisi

Prayer
Heavenly Father, teach me how to discern Your will, how to follow it, and how to make it my own in all things. For in this lies true happiness both in this world and in the next.

Read holiness, the love, the kindness, the humility - in short, read the vast fullness of all the virtues."

Waht we really are consists in what God knows us to be."

Free Book - Rise, Let Us Be On Our Way

I recently picked up three copies of JPII's book, Rise, Let Us Be On Our Way from (of all places) the Dollar store. I am reading one, have given one to my mom and have an extra copy if anyone wants it. Just leave me a comment or email me (dcnorton[at]gmail[dot]com) and I'll put it in the mail for you. I'll even pay the shipping.

Minute Meditations - July 18

Scripture
"Owe no one anything except to love one another."

(Romans 13:8)

Reflection
"It is a fact that people are always well aware of what is due them.
Unfortunately, they remain oblivious of what they owe to others."

- St. Francis de Sales

Prayer
Lord Jesus, let me not be so concerned with what others owe me. Help me to give to everyone what I owe them - especially the debt of love that You asked of us.

Music That Matters - You Shine (Adoration)

In keeping with this week's themm of adoration prayer, I offer you the following reflection from Music Chick:

...these ideas that seem paradoxical -- the great darkness that signifies greater light, the hurting that causes greater healing -- that I begin to get some sense of the mystery that is God. To me, the apparent paradox is not really a paradox, but our lack of ability to articulate a reality that cannot be expressed in words.
[This] refers to the great light of God, which brings me to You Shine sung by the Women of Faith team (lyrics below). Let me explain just a little – Women of Faith is an annual conference and apparently they recorded their worship sessions from one of their conferences and have sold it. I got this “by accident” through a music club, but I am glad that I have it as it has exposed me to a lot of worship music. One of my favorite verses is John 16:33: “I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” This verse is reflected in this song, and reminds me again of the wondrous power of God, who has conquered all of our problems even before we experience them.

Women of Faith
Album - Extraordinary Faith

Why should I feel mad,
When You made the heavens?
Why should I be afraid,
When You put the stars in place?
Why should I lose heart,
When I know how great you are?
Why should I give up,
When Your plans are full of love?

In this world we will have trouble,
But You have overcome the world!
You Shine,
Brighter than the brightest star!
Your Love,
Purer than the purest heart!
You Shine,
Filling us with courage and strength
To follow You!

Why should I feel mad,
When You made the heavens?
Why should I be afraid,
When You put the stars in place?
Why should I lose heart,
When I know how great You are?
Why should I give up,
When Your plans are full of love?

You Shine,
Brighter than the brightest star!
Your Love,
Purer than the purest heart!
You Shine,
Filling us with courage and strength
To follow You!

In this world we will have trouble,
But You have overcome the world!
You have overcome the world...!

You Shine,
Brighter than the brightest star!
Your Love,
Purer than the purest heart!
You Shine,
Filling us with courage and strength
To follow You!
You Shine,
Brighter than the brightest star!
Your Love,
Purer than the purest heart!
You Shine,
Filling us with courage and strength
To follow You!

You---- Shine----,(oh Lord! oh Lord give us courage,
give us courage and strength, to follow you!)
You---- Shine----! (to the ends of the earth! oh Lord! oh Lord!
We're gonna follow, we're gonna follow You!)

Lord Hear Our Prayer...

I pray for these things, Lord:

  • For LT and KT who each lost their father a week ago within one day of each other...

  • For their family in this time of loss...

  • For MW as she continues her job hunt...

  • For JN as he prepares for surgery at the end of the month...

  • In thanksgiving for a healthy and happy family...

  • For the war torn Middle East, that the innocents will be spared...
... We pray to the Lord.

Music That Matters - Indescribable (Adoration)

Recently, Father Jim mentioned in one of his homilies the four kinds of prayer; ACTS (Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, and Supplication). In cooperation with Music Chick, I am going to offer you songs and reflections throughout the next four weeks. Each week will carry a prayer theme. This week I'll begin with Adoration.

The following song by Chris Tomlin captures very well the feeling I have when I am adoring God. The sheer concept of who God is and what He does...sometimes I just have to praise and honor Him because I have no words to explain His awesomeness.

Indescribable (click to listen)
Chris Tomlin
Album - Arriving

From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea
Creation's revealing Your majesty
From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring
Every creature unique in the song that it sings
All exclaiming

Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
All powerful, untamable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God

Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go
Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow
Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light
Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night
None can fathom

Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name
You are amazing God
All powerful, untamable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God
You are amazing God

Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
All powerful, untamable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God
Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
Incomparable, unchangeable
You see the depths of my heart and You love me the same
You are amazing God
You are amazing God

Saint of the Day: Henry II

Today is the feast day of St. Henry II, my grandfather's patron saint.

My "Papa" as we called him, was the father of five boys, my father being the oldest. He and "Nana" were wonderful people who loved their children and adored their grandchildren. He was the daily caregiver to "Nana" who suffered from a debilitating arthritic condition which limited her movement and I know was a strain on him, though he never let on. I have very fond memories of "Papa" and know he is looking down on us, smiling.

From The Catholic Community Forum, a little on Henry II:

Son of Gisella of Burgundy and Henry II the Quarrelsome, Duke of Bavaria. Educated at the cathedral school in Hildesheim by bishop Wolfgang of Regensburg. Became Duke of Bavaria himself in 995 upon his father's death, which ended his thoughts of becoming a priest. Ascended to the throne of Germany in 1002. Crowned King of Pavia on 15 May 1004. Married Saint Cunegunda, but was never a father. Some sources claim the two lived chastely, but there is no proof of this.

Henry's brother rebelled against his power, and Henry was forced to defeat him on the battlefield, but later forgave him, and the two reconciled. He was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1014 by Pope Benedict VIII; he was the last of the Saxon dynasty of emperors. Founded schools, quelled rebellions, protected the frontiers, worked to establish a stable peace in Europe, and to reform the Church while respecting its independence. Fostered missions, and established Bamberg as a center for missions to Slavic countries. Started the construction of the cathedral at Basel, Switzerland; it took nearly 400 years to complete. Both Henry and Saint Cunegunda were prayerful people, and generous to the poor.

At one point he was cured of an unnamed illness by the touch of Saint Benedict at Monte Cassino. He became somewhat lame in his later years. Widower. Following Cunegunda's death, he considered becoming a monk, but the abbot of Saint-Vanne at Verdun refused his application, and told him to keep his place in the world where he could do much good for people and the advancement of God's kingdom.

From My Inbox: Just a Breath Away

by Marilyn Ferguson

Look for me in springtime
as raindrops fill the air...
In the splendor of the rainbow,
you'll find my presence there.

You will find me in the fragrance
of April's sweet perfume;
Drifting through the clover,
on a sultry day in June.

An August day will find me
upon the summer breeze...
On the distant sound of the thunder,
in the gently swaying trees.

In the golden fields of harvest,
is where I can be found;
As autumn time approaches
and leaves comes tumbling down.

In the wintertime when days are short
and chill is in the air...
Just look into a moonlit night,
you'll find me lingering there.

When the setting sun has gone away
and shadows fill the night;
When the cloak of darkness lifts its veil,
I'll be your morning light.

So when you feel discouraged,
get on your knees and pray;
You'll feel me there beside you...
I'm just a breath away.

From My Inbox: A Mother's Question

A mother asked President Bush,
"Why did my son have to die in Iraq?"

Another mother asked President Kennedy,
"Why did my son have to die in Viet Nam?"

Another mother asked President Truman,
"Why did my son have to die in Korea?

Another mother asked President F.D. Roosevelt,
"Why did my son have to die at Iwo Jima?"

Another mother asked President W. Wilson,
"Why did my son have to die on the battlefield of France?"

Yet another mother asked President Lincoln,
"Why did my son have to die at Gettysburg?"

And yet another mother asked President G. Washington,
"Why did my son have to die near Valley Forge?"

Then long, long ago, a mother asked...
"Heavenly Father, why did my Son have to die on a cross outside of Jerusalem?"

The answers to all these are similar --
"So that others may have life and dwell in peace, happiness and freedom."

World Cup Winners - Italy Wins the Final!!

click on pic to enlarge

UPDATE:UPDATE 7/9/06 19:00 - Italy won the final match with a sweet victory over France. The game was very well played in the first half, with both teams giving 110% and very little fouls. It went into overtime and in the 111th minute, France's Zidane - one of the captains of the French team and supposedly one of the "greatest players of all time" and whose career was to end at the end of this tournament - was ejected from the game because he head-butted Italy's Materazzi in the chest in an off-ball foul (a really blatent and unnecessary show of unsportsmanlike behavior). It was to be the deciding factor in France's defeat. With Zidane out during penalty kicks, Italy scored all five and denied France their second. With Zidane in the penalty kick lineup, who knows what might have happened?

UPDATE:UPDATE 7/8/06 21:00 - Germany beat Portugal 3-1 to give them the 3rd place slot.

UPDATE:UPDATE 7/1/06 19:40 - Well, looks like I was way off base for today's matches. Portugal beat England after 30 minutes of overtime in pentalty shots. England's Beckam was injured shortly into the 2nd half, and Rooney was sent out for stepping on a Portugal's player's groin.

Brazil succommed to France in a match I was unable to watch. Needless to say (but I'm gonna anyway) I was really surprised with France advancing.
This shakes my predictions up a bit.

I'll be bringing this page to the top as the teams advance. I'll also show where I went wrong and right in my predictions below.

OK. The US got trounced by Ghana and sent home. Then I rooted for the Swedes who got smacked around by the Brits and left for the fjord. My last option is to cheer on the "home team" or at least the team hosting this year's World Cup, Germany.

Here are my picks for the remaining games:

Last Round of 16
Brazil destroys Ghana in Match 55
Update: Brazil 3 - Ghana 0
Spain fries France in Match 56
Update: Spain 1 - France 3

Quarter-Finals
Germany blitzes Argentina in Match 57
Update: Germany 4 - Argentina 2 in OT w/ penalty kicks!
Italy is victorious over the Ukraine in Match 58
Update: Italy 3 - 0 Ukraine
England sends Portugal home in Match 59
Update: England 1 - Portugal 3 in OT w/ penalty kicks!
Brazil creams Spain France in Match 60
Update: Brazil 0 - France 1

Semi-Finals
Germany beats Italy in Match 61 (making the Pope feel kinda funny)
Update: Italy 2 - Germany 0 - In overtime! A well deserved victory!!
Brazil Portugal barely beats beats up England France in Match 62 (God I pray)
Update: Portugal 0 - 1 France, ugh!

Final
Germany Italy narrowly destroys wins over Brazil Portugal France by three two goals.
Update: Italy 6 - France 4 in OT and PSO!

Any discussion out there?

From My Inbox: The Potter and the Clay

The Potter And The Clay
By Tom Larson

But who indeed are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Will what is made say to its maker,"Why have you created me so?"
Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for a noble purpose and another for an ignoble one?

Romans 9:20-21

"Use me Potter" said the clay, "may your will I obey...
I can serve you so well underground.
With my friends full of cheer, I'm so comfortable here...
in my warm fellowship deep down."

But the Potter, nothing said, pulled the clay from its bed…
brought it out to be used for his will.
To his workshop he carried, that clay so long buried...
to be shaped by the master's great skill.

"Let me go," said the clay, "for I'd much rather stay...
down below where I'm safe and secure.
For the light is too bright and you don't have the right...
to expect me, these trials, to endure."

But the clay was deformed and softened and torn...
as the Potter's strong hands worked within.
On the wheel it was placed as the Potter erased...
the impurities and stains of sin.

As the Potter's wheel turned, his fingers soft but firm...
began forming the clay inside out.
"Not so fast" said the clay, "If you ask, I will say...
that my shape's much too ugly and stout."

"So what are you making me? I know what I'd rather be...
a wine goblet fit for a queen.
Then all men would praise you, your knowledge and talent too...
when they see how I sparkle and gleam."

But the potter, knowing his trade, and taking the shape that he'd made...
quickly placed it in the kiln's flame.
"I asked you to use me, not afflict and abuse me!"
sobbed the clay, while enduring the pain.

Yet what finally emerged, from the fire that had purged...
a large bowl, smooth, yet toughened by glaze.
With adequate breadth and thick sides of great depth...
to withstand the heat of a blaze.

The bowl then saw clearly that he indeed was loved dearly...
made exactly the way he should be.
So he ceased his complaints, and his selfish restraints...
and made ready to serve gratefully.

The Potter sent his creation to an overseas nation...
where famine stalked a desperate race...
and then the bowl blessed, the Potter's wise thoughtfulness...
when he saw the needy face to face.

So he toiled hard and long, while inside grew a song...
as he saw each new need satisfied...
and he laughed at vain dreams, and the small petty schemes...
for which he once desperately strived.

Many times he was lifted, from a well where he dipped in...
to the life giving water from the depths.
Countless times he was drained, of the life he contained...
by cracked thirsty lips close to death.

And then thin ragged crowds, they, the bowl would surround...
while many a supper he cooked.
For he's no dainty glass, as he'd hoped in years past...
sitting uselessly while admirers looked.

You can find him today in that land faraway...
by a campfire all sooty and dark...
with plenty of chips, cracks and grease drips...
for the years of hard use leave their marks.

But he'll never return, to the comfort he's spurned...
for he learned that joy grows ever sweet...
when serving at last, at his own special task...
that the Potter created him to complete.

From My Inbox: 10 Lessons On The Beach

painting by Bansemer Studio & Gallery

This summer, let the ocean teach you about God.
By Christopher and Karen Bellitto

1. Sunrise, sunset, surf
The sunrise and sunset offshore are dependable and steady, just like God’s love in our lives. The surf itself can represent God’s steady presence in our lives. He is always there whether the waves are big or small. Sometimes you can’t even see the waves due to fog or darkness, but you can always hear them. God is like that: Even if we are wondering where God might be in our lives during times that we’re sure he’s not there—the divine presence is regular, steady, even spectacular at times.

2.Tides
Tides change, yet they are constant. They will exist, forming the shoreline, much in the same way that God forms and shapes us throughout the times of our lives. Waves are relentless—they just keep coming—which reminds us of the way God keeps surrounding us with love, even when we resist. Sometimes we think God hits us with more than we can handle, but as the shore is resilient, so are we. How many times have we fought the tide, literally tried to swim against it, only to find that when we give in, it’s a much smoother ride? We know how powerful the water can be, especially when we’re in it. We want to be in charge and go in a certain direction. Fighting the undertow or waves is only a waste of energy. The water is actually more help when we give in and let it lead. We’ve got to let go and let God take us where he wants us to be. Often, it’s a much more interesting place, especially since God knows better what’s good for us.

3. Water
As the surf represents God’s presence, the water itself is his love. It is calm underneath at all times even if the surface is stormy. Life will continue to go on steadily and God will always be there if we know where to look. Even in the deepest parts of the ocean where it is darker than night, there is life. Where we think there is blackness and death, we are actually surrounded by God’s love. We’re not alone.

4. Shells
Shells are God’s gifts to us, treasures to find and share with others. Shells can represent our unique God-given talents and gifts. Scallop shells, so small yet plentiful on most beaches, bring us joy in their varied colors and delicacy. It’s as though we can’t have too many, despite their abundance. Some of our talents may look much like those others possess, but we each have our own shading, shape and size. Our talents, however plentiful, deserve to be held up, delighted in and treasured—just as we do on the beach. Conch shells are rarely found intact on most beaches. We’re more likely to buy them at an oceanfront souvenir shop. To find one requires deep water and diving skills. Going out into deep water is necessary for finding some personal, hidden talents as well. It feels risky to express our individuality sometimes. But a conch holds the sound of the ocean, the rush of God’s breath, inside. Some talents are like that: rare, beautiful, hard to find, challenging to express, but well worth the risk of diving inward and revealing the treasure.

5. Rocks
The rocks along the shore can hurt our feet but eventually make the soles of our feet stronger, more able to endure. Such are the tests in our lives that God knows we can get through. The first day on the beach we hesitate to go barefoot. We protect ourselves. But to experience fully the ocean of life, we have to take off our shoes and leave a mark on the sand, even though the rocks leave their mark on us as well.

6. Dunes
The dunes that protect the shore are like family and friends protecting us from wearing down in the elements. Many beachfront properties have had to rebuild dunes mistakenly obliterated by developers. We need cushions from the power of ocean winds and tides. We can’t bulldoze our way ahead, without concern for the people around us. We need them—and we are dunes for them as well.

7. Gear
Too often, we want to be in charge of the journey and we fight God’s guidance. When our family goes to the beach, we usually pack for the duration with coolers, umbrellas, chairs, sunscreen, refreshments, towels and books to read. But we’ve found that all this gear can be a burden—to pack, to haul, to set up and to guard. Sometimes, the less you bring the more you enjoy. That’s how it is when you are open and welcoming to God and God’s inspiration in your life. You can get along without so much stuff. You can be free.

8. Breeze
The sun at the beach can be very hot and can burn us if we’re not careful. God is in the cool breeze and refreshing spray of water. We need the cool respite to survive on the beach. We also need to be alert to God’s whisper in the breeze within our lives, sometimes so full of turmoil and pain. Sometimes we have to turn just so, to catch the breeze. We need to pay attention, to seek out what will cool and refresh us.

9. Space
As much as we’ve learned about God’s very personal relationship with us at the beach, we’ve also learned to share that space. Other people with their radios, blankets and beach balls can crowd in on our carefully marked-out turf. We’re sometimes jealous and selfish of the attention and blessings and gifts God gives to other people. But God is infinite. There’s plenty to go around. The immensity of the ocean and the expanse of the shoreline manifest abundance, not limits or borders.

10. Lighthouses
Lighthouses teach as well. Not every shoreline has a lighthouse, but those that do are beacons for anyone who is at sea. God is a beacon in our lives, the steady light that always comes around again. When God’s light is not on us, it’s no doubt on other people. Sometimes we forget that there are others who need God’s help more than we do. When that happens, we’ve got to be patient and generous. Maybe we can say a prayer for those people who are receiving the lighthouse beacon when it’s not on us. It’s a good time to remember that we’re in the light often enough to be guided toward our destination.

The ocean is full of power and majesty, as is God in the divine, infinite wisdom.
Enjoy the view. Remember the metaphors. Delight in the ocean, God’s pulsating and abundant fullness.

World Cup Fever Inside the Vatican

I wonder what the Pope has by his chair while he's watching the World Cup? Cheetos? Granola? Nuts?

From Whispers in the Loggia:

It's definitely summer at the Vatican. Further proof of this is that the Pope, together with his trusty secretary, Msgr Georg Ganswein, and the four laywomen of the Memores Domini who assist in the papal apartment, will be spending Tuesday night watching the World Cup semifinal pitting the German pontiff's native side against the Italians.

This news comes from no less a source than Ganswein, who told the ADNKronos news agency that, indeed, Germany-Italy "is at the center" of discussion and interest in the papal apartments. A big-screen television is being brought in just for the occasion, to boot.

But who's the Ratzi-Bear rooting for? While Ganswein readily admitted to waving the flag for Germany, and the MD contingent are hard-core Italy fans, he made it known that "The Pope is always impartial and will have as great a heart on Tuesday for Germany as for the team of blue," a reference to the Italian side.

(2Cor 4:10)

Reflection

It is being completed from day to day in each true Christian, and will be fully completed only at the end of time."

- St. John Eudes

Minute Meditations - July 1

Scripture
"Everyone who exalts himseld will be humbled, but the one who humbles himseld will be exalted."

(Luke 18:14)

Reflection
"Observe a surprising fact. God is on high. You exalt yourself and God flees from you. You humble yourself and He come to you.
God looks upon the humble to exalt them, but He regards the proud from afar to abase them."

- St. Augustine

Prayer
Almighty Father, whenever I seek to take pride in what I do, remind me of the way things really are. The only good I have comes from You; all that is mine is my weakness..

From My Inbox: Write it on the back of your envelopes!

You may have heard in the news that a couple of Post Offices in Texas have been forced to take down small posters that say "IN GOD WE TRUST," The law, they say, is being violated.

Anyway, I heard proposed on a radio station show, that we should all write "In God We Trust" on the back of all our mail. After all, that is our national motto, and it's on all the money we use to buy those stamps. I think it is a wonderful idea.

We must take back our nation from all the people who think that anything that offends them should be removed.

If you like this idea, please pass it on and DO IT. Tthe idea of writing or stamping "In God We Trust" on our envelopes sounds good.

It has been reported that 86% of Americans believe in God. Why there is such a mess about having "In God We Trust" in our money and having God in the Pledge of Allegiance? Could it be that we just need to take action and tell the 14% to "sit down and shut up"?

If you agree, pass this on.

Minute Meditations - June 30

Scripture
"Give me an accounting of your stewardship."

(Luke 16:2)

Reflection
"Don't you have by your side booklets on which you enter your account each day?
In the Same way, You must make an accounting every day for your conscience."

- St. John Crysostom

Prayer
God of forgiveness, help me to make a daily examination of conscience. Teach me how to pinpoint faults, ask Your forgiveness for them, and resolve to do better in the future.

UPDATE:
In response to thebluesbutterfly's comment to this post, I have come up with a few links to help someone in their Examination of Conscience. The majority of what I have found (and I just Googled "Examination of Conscience") use reflective questions formed around the Ten Commandments. What have you all found to be helpful?

Music That Matters - Celebrate You

Today we wrap up the theme of friendship with Steven Curtis Chapman's "Celebrate You" from his Signs of Life CD. Continuing on yesterday's thought, Music Chick continues her reflection:

Likewise, when we give and never take, then we never allow our friends to give and show their friendship for us, and that is as selfish and unjust as always taking and never giving. And, in many cases, I find that it takes more strength for me to show my weakness to my friends than to be a source of strength for them.

Steven Curtis Chapman
Album - Signs of Life

I'm no stranger to your gentle reminders
That the world does not revolve around me
But no sooner have you spoken the words
Then your love comes once again to surround me
And every time I look in your eyes
I see the reflections of myself
But this time I want to look deeper
And see you and nobody else

So, tell me what you think, and tell me what you feel
I want to hear the thunder I'm so quick to steal
Listen to the dreams you're dreaming and celebrate you
Let me show you what a treasure you are
A priceless gift from heaven to this thankful heart
I want to take this lifetime to celebrate you
I want to celebrate you

I have heard you say so many times
How you're sorry you're not everything you should be
So let me tell you this one more time
There's no way you could be any more precious to me
But I know that lovely flowers and phrases
Are not what you need the most from me
You're longing for someone to listen
And that's what I want to learn how to be

I want to share your laughter
And I want to share your tears
We're gonna share this life together
And I'm gonna celebrate you
Celebrate you

Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, the Great Apostles

Today is a special day for me, as we celebrate the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul. I can really relate to St. Peter, from whom I chose my confirmation name. He was so full of failure and had so many shortcomings, yet it was he whom Jesus built his Church. Peter had a natural leadership quality. He wasn't the most educated of the apostles, yet he was the one (other than Jesus) the other apostles listened to.

I just finished reading Twelve Ordinary Men and John MacArthur shed some insight as to why Peter was sometimes called Simon by Jesus. It was kind of like when your mother called you by your first and middle name when you were in trouble. Whn Peter wasn't living up to Jesus's expectations, he was refered to as Simon. I thought that was very interesting.

St. Augustine writes:

Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, and Paul followed. And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostles' blood. Let us embrace what they believed, their life, their labors, their sufferings, their preaching, and their confession of faith.
Prayer:
Almighty God, whose blessed apostles Peter and Paul glorified you by their martyrdom: Grant that your Church, instructed by their teaching and example, and knit together in unity by your Spirit, may ever stand firm upon the one foundation, which is Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Music That Matters - I Will Carry You

As we continue looking at songs that reflect the theme of friendship, Michael W. Smith's "I Will Carry You" is one of two Music Chick feels describes the beauty of true friendship. She says:

This song describes for me the beauty of true friendship – the give and take, ebb and flow of relationship. It is an acknowledgment that, in friendship, there are times when we need and when we are needed, and the mark of a friendship is to be there for others in their time of need... AND to allow others to be there for us in our time of need. If we only take and never give, we are not really friends.

Do It Again (click to listen)
Micheal W. Smith
Album - This is Your Time

Sometimes I wonder if my beating heart has a reason
The thought of breathing only takes my breath away
I've spent so many nights wrestling with this feeling
Do I have the strength to make it through the day
But I was never meant
To walk this road alone
I can always trust you
When you say

I will carry you
Be your strength
And pull you through
Reach for me
And take my hand
We will pray
And we will stand
In a world
Crying out for peace
Let your heart be strong
For when I am weak
You will carry me

Sometimes You wonder if the road you're on has a reason
It's hard to go on, when you just don't know
We can shoulder all the weight of life between us
Until the fear of what we cannot see is gone
Cause we were never meant
to walk this road alone
we are bound together
When we say

Music That Matters - Promise My Prayers

In tying with the theme of friendship, today's song "Promise My Prayers" by Rachel Lapa from the Girls of Grace CD offers a similar message as yesterday's song. Re-emphasizing what Music Chick hit upon earlier:

The greatest gift that we can give each other as brothers and sisters in Christ is to love each other enough to pray for each other... because while we may not know what our friends need, or know how to tell our friends what we need from them, God knows what we need... and will provide it if we ask, whether ask for ourselves or on behalf of someone else.

Rachel Lampa
Album - Girls of Grace

I'll cover, I'll cover you, I'll cover

Hey now you know it's true
After all that we've been through
You can count on me
When it comes down to the end
I will always be your friend
No matter where you go
I want you to know now

Chorus
I promise my prayers
I promise my heart
I'll be thinking of you
Wherever you are
When the daylight is done
When the night is so dark
When I cannot be there
I promise my prayers
Down each road we take
We're joined together when we pray
No matter where life leads
I will lift you up
You'll be covered by His love
The angels will find you
I'm here to remind you now

Chorus

I'll cover, I'll cover you, I'll cover

Beyond our understanding
His hand is moving and we
stand amazed
I pray His love will guide you
I know He's there beside you always

Chorus

Music That Matters - Carry You To Jesus

Today's musical selection is "Carry You to Jesus" from Steven Curtis Chapman's CD Declaration. Music Chick reflects:

This song describes the essence of a faith-based friendship. There have been times in my life when I have felt at a loss as to help a friend through a difficult time – whether it be divorce, or the loss of a loved one, or abuse, or whatever. Likewise, there have been times when friends have asked me how they can help in the midst of my own despair... and I have been unable to answer that for them also. But the greatest gift that we can give each other as brothers and sisters in Christ is to love each other enough to pray for each other... because while we may not know what our friends need, or know how to tell our friends what we need from them, God knows what we need... and will provide it if we ask, whether ask for ourselves or on behalf of someone else.

Steven Curtis Chapman
Album - Declaration

I will not pretend to feel the pain you're going through
I know I cannot comprehend the hurt you've known
And I used to think it mattered if I understood
But now I just don't know

Well, I'll admit sometimes I still wish I knew what to say
And I keep looking for a way to fix it all
But we know we're at the mercy of God's higher ways
And our ways are so small

(Chorus)
But I will carry you to Jesus
He is everything you need
I will carry you to Jesus on my knees

It's such a privilege for me to give this gift to you
All I'd ever hope you give me in return
Is to know that you'll be there to do the same for me
When the tables turn

(Chorus)

And if you need to cry go on and I, I will cry along with you. yeah
I've given you what I have but still I know the best thing I can do
Is just pray for you

(Chorus)

I'll carry you
I'll take you to Jesus on my knees

Music That Matters - Do It Again

Today kicks off one of five songs dealing with friendship, courtesy of my anonymous reader, who from now own I will refer to as "Music Chick". She says of today's selection, "Do It Again" by Point of Grace's on their CD, I Choose You:

“Do It Again” by Point of Grace is, for me, a song about how God uses the friends in my life to speak to me (lyrics are below). I think one of our biggest challenges as Catholic Christians is learning to read the signs that God sends us in everyday life instead of expecting burning bushes or dark, thunderous clouds. I am blessed to have people in my life who cheer me when I’m sad, who challenge me to be a better person, who listen when I need to talk, and who envelop me in a hug when I feel vulnerable and scared. Too many times, I fight to be independent and work through things on my own rather than relying on their friendship... and that self-reliance is true for my relationship with God too; I do not like to feel helpless, but it is only in acknowledging our dependence on God that deep relationship can flourish.

Do It Again (click to listen)
Point of Grace
Album - I Choose You

Just when I think it couldn’t be
Any harder down here
Another blow comes out of nowhere
And knocks me out again
And when I think I’m all alone
The phone starts to ring
It’s just the voice I needed to hear
On the other end

Chorus
You do it again, You do it again
You speak to me just like a friend
You always seem to show up right on time
You do it again, I guess you know when
My heart needs to hear your voice
I’m so forgetful, that’s why I’m thankful
You do it again

I could be driving in my car
I turn the radio on
Trying to figure out my thoughts
Then I hear the perfect song
I can open up Your word
And not be sure where to turn
But I start to read and it’s like you know
Just what I need

Chorus

You use all these things to speak to me
Could it be you’re using me
In someone else’s life
Well I wouldn’t be surprised

Chorus

From My Inbox: Hands

A basketball in my hands is worth about $19.
A basketball in Michael Jordan's hands is worth about $33 million.
It depends whose hands it's in.

A baseball in my hands is worth about $6.
A baseball in Johan Santana's hands is worth $4.75 million.
It depends on whose hands it's in.

A tennis racket is useless in my hands.
A tennis racket in Venus Williams' hands is championship winning.
It depends whose hands it's in.

A rod in my hands will keep away a wild animal
A rod in Moses' hands will part the mighty sea.
It depends whose hands it's in.

A sling shot in my hands is a kid's toy
A sling shot in David's hand is a mighty weapon.
It depends whose hands it's in.

Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in my hands is a couple of fish sandwiches.
Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in God's hands will feed thousands.
It depends whose hands it's in.

Nails in my hands might produce a birdhouse.
Nails in Jesus Christ's hands will produce salvation for the entire world.
It depends whose hands it's in.

As you see now it depends whose hands it's in.
So put your concerns, your worries, your fears, your hopes, your dreams, your families and your relationships in God's hands because...
It depends whose hands it's in.

This message is now in YOUR hands.
What will YOU do with it?
It depends on WHOSE hands it's in!!!

Prayer Intentions

Please pray for my brother, Todd and his family as they fly in from San Diego today.
Also, keep Father Jim in your prayers as he continues to travel around the world on a much deserved vacation.

O Almighty and merciful God, who hast commissioned Thy angels to guide and protect us, command them to be their assiduous companions from their setting out until their return; to clothe them with their invisible protection; to keep from them all danger of collision, of fire, of explosion, of fall and bruises, and finally, having preserved them from all evil, and especiallyf rom sin, to guide them to our heavenly home. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

UPDATE
I just got some pictures Father Jim took on his vacation. See the slideshow.

From My Inbox: Drug Problem

The other day, someone at a store in our town read that a methaphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county and asked an older gentleman a rhetorical question. "Why wasn't there a drug problem when you were young?"
The man replied: "I had a drug problem when I was young:

I was drug to church on Sunday.
I was drug to church for weddings and funerals.
I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter what the weather.
I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults.
I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.
I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profane four-letter word.
I was drug out to pull weeds in mom's garden and flower bed and cockleburs out of dad's fields.
I was drug to the homes of family, friends and neighbors to help out some poor soul, we had to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some firewood; and, if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed.

These drugs are still in my veins; and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin; and, if today's children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place."

Feast of Corpus Christi

This weekend begins the Feast of Corpus Christi.

Please find time this weekend to spend some time in Eucharistic Adoration. Remember that during Eucharistic Adoration, it is important for us to listen to what God is saying to us. This is not a time for us to be asking God to listen to what we have to say.

From My Inbox: Prescribed by the Great Physician

The next time you feel like GOD can't use you, just remember...

  • Noah was a drunk

  • Abraham was too old

  • Isaac was a daydreamer

  • Jacob was a liar

  • Leah was ugly

  • Joseph was abused

  • Moses had a stuttering problem

  • Gideon was afraid

  • Samson had long hair and was a womanizer

  • Rahab was a prostitute

  • Jeremiah and Timothy were too young

  • David had an affair and was a murderer

  • Elijah was suicidal

  • Isaiah preached naked

  • Jonah ran from God

  • Naomi was a widow

  • Job went bankrupt

  • Peter denied Christ

  • The Disciples fell asleep while praying

  • Martha worried about everything

  • The Samaritan woman was divorced, more than once

  • Zaccheus was too small

  • Paul was too religious

  • Timothy had an ulcer... AND

  • Lazarus was dead!

Now! No more excuses! God can use you to your full potential.. Besides you aren't the message, you are just the messenger.
  1. God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts.

  2. Dear God, I have a problem, it's Me.

  3. Growing old is inevitable .. growing UP is optional.

  4. There is no key to happiness. The door is always open.

  5. Silence is often misinterpreted but never misquoted.

  6. Do the math ... count your blessings.

  7. Faith is the ability to not panic.

  8. Laugh every day, it's like inner jogging.

  9. If you worry, you didn't pray. If you pray, don't worry.

  10. As a child of God, prayer is kind of like calling home everyday.

  11. Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape.

  12. The most important things in your house are the people.

  13. When we get tangled up in our problems, be still. God wants us to be still so He can untangle the knot.

  14. A grudge is a heavy thing to carry.

  15. He who dies with the most toys is still dead.
Have a great day!!! The SON is shining and he can certainly use you!

PG Rating for evangelism

It's a sad state when the MPAA places "too much religion" in the same category as "brief nudity", "violence", and "strong themes". But that is what they have done to Facing the Giants, a low budget film focusing on overcoming the odds in life with help from the Lord.

The story from Scripps Howard News Service, highlights why the MPAA chose this rating:

"What the MPAA said is that the movie contained strong 'thematic elements' that might disturb some parents," said Kris Fuhr, vice president for marketing at Provident Films, which is owned by Sony Pictures. Provident plans to open the film next fall in 380 theaters nationwide with the help of Samuel Goldwyn Films, which has worked with indie movies like "The Squid and the Whale."

Which "thematic elements" earned this squeaky-clean movie its PG?

"Facing the Giants" is too evangelistic.

The MPAA, noted Fuhr, tends to offer cryptic explanations for its ratings. In this case, she was told that it "decided that the movie was heavily laden with messages from one religion and that this might offend people from other religions. It's important that they used the word 'proselytizing' when they talked about giving this movie a PG. ...

Read about the plot of the movie here.

Music That Matters: Barlow Girl, Jonah33

Here are three songs that epitomize the lukewarmness (is that a word?) that so many of us feel in our spiritual lives. I think that "going through the motions" is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it seems that with everything we are called to do like being a parent and spouse, our jobs, our volunteerism, etc., it good to be on "autopilot" every once in awhile. It is what keeps us sane and prevents us from feeling overwhelmed and losing sight of what is really important.

I think Barlow Girl sums it up nicely in "Never Alone" when they say:

I cry out with no reply
And I can't feel You by my side
So I'll hold tight to what I know
You're here and I'm never alone
We cannot separate
You're part of me
and though You're invisible
I trust the unseen
Thanks to my anonymous reader for supplying me with another three-pack. I got it yesterday, so for you hockey fans out there, I guess this is a "hat-trick"

Album - Another Journal Entry

Greys my favorite color
Black and white has never been my thing
I'll take my drink lukewarm now
Hot and cold is not the thing for me

Absolutes are hidden
I've buried my convictions

Chorus:
I cannot be blind no more
Numb to what I'm living for
Help me stop this compromise that justifies these lies
I need Your passion in this life

I don't want to impose
Who really needs to know what I believe
Cause no one likes rockin boats
And who would care to see the way I see

Absolutes are hidden
I've buried my convictions

I cannot be blind no more
Numb to what I'm living for
Help me stop this compromise that justifies these lies
I need Your passion in this life

So give me the fire, yeah
God give me Your fire
And raise this life higher

I cannot be blind no more
Numb to what Im living for
Help me stop this compromise that justifies these lies
I need Your passion in this life

I cannot be blind no more
Numb to what I'm living for
Help me stop this compromise that justifies these lies
I need Your passion in this life

Grey's my favorite color, yeah!

Never Alone

Album - Another Journal Entry

I waited for You today
But You didn't show
No. No. No
I needed You today
So where did you go?
You told me to call
Said You'd be there
And though I haven't seen You
Are You still there?

Chorus:
I cry out with no reply and
I can't feel You by my side
So I'll hold tight to what I know
You're here and I'm never alone.

And though I cannot see You
and I can't explain why
Such a deep, deep reassurance
You've placed in my life oh
We cannot separate
'Cause You're part of me
and though You're invisible
I'll trust the unseen

Chorus:
I cry out with no reply
And I can't feel You by my side
So I'll hold tight to what I know
You're here and I'm never alone
We cannot separate

I have heard about the days of old
About the men who followed You
And how they saw the Supernatural
And became the chosen few

So I come before You now
Tearing off my earthly crowns
for this one thing I have Found

I want Faith Like That
To see the dead rise
or to see You pass by
Oh I, I want Faith Like That
Whatever the cost
I'll suffer the loss, Oh I
I want Faith Like That

I'm not looking for a miracle
Signs and Wonders are things thereof
I caught a glimpse of what You want from me
and what I have is not enough

I read the story one more time
of those who gave to You their lives
With no fear or compromise

I want Faith Like That
To see the dead rise
or to see You pass by
Oh I, I want Faith Like That
Whatever the cost
I'll suffer the loss, Oh I
I want the Faith that can move any mountain
and send them to the sea
I want the Faith that can break every stronghold
That keeps you, keeps you from me

I want Faith Like That
To see the dead rise
or to see You pass by
Oh I, I want Faith Like That

I want Faith Like That
To see the dead rise
or to see You pass by
Oh I, I want Faith Like That
Whatever the cost
I'll suffer the loss, Oh I
I want Faith Like That, a Faith like that

From My Inbox: Scars

Some years ago, on a hot summer day in south Florida, a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out the back door leaving shoes, socks, and shirt as he went.

He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the center of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward the shore. His father working in the yard saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In utter fear, he ran toward the water, yelling to his son as loudly as he could.

Hearing his voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to his father. It was too late.

Just as he reached his father, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the father grabbed his boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the father, but the father was much too passionate to let go.

A farmer happened to drive by, heard his screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.

Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boyrecovered. His legs were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the alligator and, on his arms, were deep scratches where his father's fingernails dug into his flesh in his effort to hang on to his son.

The newspaper reporter who interviewed the boy after the trauma, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, "But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Dad wouldn't let go."

You and I can identify with that little boy. We have scars, too. No, not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret . But, some wounds are because God has refused to let go. In the midst of your life He's been there holding onto you.

The Scripture teaches that God loves you. You are a child of God. He wants to protect you and provide for you in every way, but sometimes we wade into dangerous situations, not knowing what lies ahead.

The swimming hole of life is filled with peril - and we forget that the enemy is waiting to attack. That's when the tug-of-war begins. If you have the scars of His love on your arms, be very, very grateful. He did not and will not ever let you go.
